Another Memphis Musical – Called Memphis!

We’ve all heard how African-Americans invented rock n roll and the mainstream white audience was years behind in jumping aboard the R&B bandwagon, but no other tale tells this story like Memphis. Tickets to this Broadway show have been literally selling out as fast as they can print them; word of how sizzlin’ hot this musical is is out! Memphis is the story of forbidden fruit and alleyways in the Tennessee city forever associated with Elvis Presley but whose seamy underbelly involved so much more. Huey Calhoun is a good ol’ white local DJ who loves music – especially rhythm and blues. When, on his nightly visits to Memphis’s seedy nightclubs and recording studios, he meets a beautiful black singer called Felicia Farrell, Huey’s world explodes with a passion and dedication to R&B not yet seen among the southern city’s white population. Their affair is frowned upon from both sides of the racial divide, but they are in love, and love makes the world go round, and in this case, the records.

As Huey and Felicia become each successful in their respective careers, outside pressures begin to peck away at their union, and the music just keeps on comin’. This production is noted for its brilliant use of dance energy as well as atmospherics Memphis the Musical will fill you with the urge to dance, and some of Broadway’s best ever choreography will amaze and the singing will mesmerize. The dark and dangerous Memphis nightlife provides a colorful backdrop to a story of music, dance, romance and culture. The race issues are right up front throughout but dealt with in such a slick manner it becomes a given – but in a good way, if that’s possible. Added to this novel mix are some storming tunes from Bon Jovi keyboardist David Bryan, along with Joe DiPietro’s vivid lyrics. Buy Memphis tickets and make a night of it.
